The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, lived in Madina for about ten years after the migration from Makkah, and this period is one of the most important and eventful in the whole of Islamic history, because it was during these years that the message of Islam was firmly established and the first Muslim community and state took shape. During this period, many of the laws and practices of Islam concerning worship, social life, dealings between people, and the conduct of the community were established, and the religion took its complete form as a way of life. Towards the end of this period, the Muslims were able to return to Makkah in triumph, and the sacred house was cleansed of idols and restored to the worship of the one God. The mission of the Prophet reached its completion during these years, and he performed his final pilgrimage and delivered his farewell address, in which he summarised the essential teachings of the faith, shortly before his passing. The ten years in Madina therefore witnessed the transformation of Islam from the faith of a small persecuted group into an established religion and a growing community.
